A quick welcome from Melissa and Seasons...

Welcome to Aspire Birth Academy's Beginning Birth Assistant course!

We're Melissa Chappell, CPM, LDEM and Seasons Warner, CPM, LDEM, two passionate midwives on a mission to provide accessible education to students who have a dream of becoming midwives one day (or at least love the idea of becoming an assistant).

Home birth and birth centers are on the rise, as more and more women are choosing to give birth in the comfort of their own homes or in freestanding birth centers. We're doing our part to help educate new midwifery students to help make midwives more accessible to people that might not otherwise have access to one.

If your dream is to become a midwife, we'd love to be part of your educational journey. Stay tuned for our upcoming birth skills retreats held here in Provo, Utah, where we'll practice midwifery skills and get you ready to be the best apprentice ever. Thanks for being here and for supporting quality maternity care for all!

Testimonials

"I have taken the Doula, Birth Assistant and Advance Student Midwifery classes from Seasons and Melissa. They have taught me so much information and have helped me develop and hone many hands on skills. One of the greatest things about the class was the deep love and connection Seasons and Melissa brought to the class and the birthing community. I am grateful for the deepened trust and appreciation I have developed for women and their ability to birth. I am a hands on learner and need to be able to discuss the material to absorb and understand, these classes have been amazing!! Highly recommend studying with these women, they have excellent evidence based practice and they take the time to connect with each individual!"

"I first trained as a doula with Melissa in 2006 and I've taken other courses with her since, including the birth assistant course taught by her and Seasons. They're both so wonderful as teachers, passionate about students' success, and fun to learn from. They really want their students to love birth and midwifery, while also having a realistic understanding of what the responsibilities are. They care a lot and, as a student, it's refreshing and exciting to train with them!"

-SARAH BRAUN

"I LOVED learning with Melissa and Seasons. They are passionate about helping their students to understand, comprehend and apply new information. I felt loved, supported, challenged, and inspired as we delved deeply into pertinent information that will bless the lives of women and their babies as I continue on my path toward becoming a competent and capable midwife. They showed me what it means to nurture, and to care. If you have an opportunity to study with Seasons and Melissa, I heartily recommend it!"

-JULIA VANCE

"Having taken the Birth Assistant Training classes with Seasons and Melissa, I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to get started in midwifery or in birth assisting!

I learned so much, everything was perfectly paced, and the environment was fun and relaxed! I was already a birth junkie, and there was still so much that helped me connect the dots and fill in the gaps of what I already knew.

It was amazing! 10/10, would do again!"

-ERINN FUNK

"Melissa and Seasons are the perfect team. They were very professional while creating a welcome and enjoyable learning space. I am so fortunate to have been able to learn from them. I never left class feeling like it was a waste of time, but left inspired to do more and excited for the next class. I left with so much information and many tools to build on. If I had an assignment/skill I felt uncomfortable with, they were patient and willing to go over it and let me practice or ask all the questions until I got it down. They let their love for birth work and women spill over into their teaching and topics they covered. I have so much gratitude for Seasons and Melissa and their dedication."

-EMILY ALLRED

You can really tell that they care deeply for those they teach. Their personal experiences in the birth world coupled with their expert knowledge and real world experience make this one of the top trainings out there for birth professionals. Cannot recommend them enough!!!”

-JULIE FRANCOM

"Ever since I heard that Melissa and Seasons were going to start teaching Birth Assisting classes I knew that I had to do it. This class was everything I needed and wanted it to be. We learned as a community of like minded women who all want to make a difference in the world of birth. Who want to see women give birth in their full power and learning how to understand physiological birth so we can best support these mothers. I will forever be grateful for my amazing teachers.”

-TRISTA BIRDZELL

“Melissa and Seasons are a dream team and EVERYONE wanting to become a birth professional would benefit from learning from them because they are the whole package: evidence based knowledge and experience, compassionate and empathetic approach AND they are the perfect example of how a birth team SHOULD work like. I took their class while beginning my apprenticeship under the supervision of another birth professional and I know I would've left my calling had I not had them in that time of my life. Without them knowing I was able to soak in their love for midwifery, their passion for supporting other women and their companionship as I watch them teach us. Also, I learned SO MUCH from them that I grew immensely in my confidence and reinforced my love for this field of work. I'm forever grateful.”

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will this course certify me as a Beginning Birth Assistant?

A: This course does not give an official certification, but you will receive a certificate of completion if you complete the coursework and pass the quizzes. Most people find that when approaching midwives as a potential apprentice, showing this certificate plus a list of subjects learned is a good way to prove to the midwife that you have the necessary skills to start out as a beginning birth assistant or beginning apprentice.

Q: How long do I have to complete the course?

A: You have six months to complete this course at which time your link will expire. For a fee, you may request an extension.

Q: Can I begin practicing as a midwife after taking this course?

A: No. This course does not certify you or approve you in any way to become a midwife. This course is only a beginning class that is a good first step toward eventually becoming a midwife or apprenticing with a midwife.

Q: How much time does this course require?

A: This course has 1-2 hours of videos in each module and each of those modules has approximately 1-3 hours of outside coursework. Plan on 2-5 hours for completion of each module.

Q: Can I jump ahead and finish the course more quickly than doing one module each week?

A: You may jump ahead but if you don’t pass the quizzes and finish the coursework, you will not be allowed to move forward until those are finished.

Q: How is the coursework graded?

A: The coursework is not submitted and graded, but you will have to complete it and then check off whether or not you have done each item. We work on the honor system with coursework, hoping that every person who wants to work as a midwife will understand the importance of integrity and honesty.

Q: What if I don’t understand the work or have questions about something in the course?

A: We’ve tried hard to design this course to be used with either an apprenticeship or just before working in an apprenticeship. We hope that you will utilize the guidance and help of your sister midwives and other students to help you understand the coursework and to answer any questions you may have. If you cannot find the answers to your questions, we will answer them via email, once per week.
